Drag shows! Abortion! Same sex marriage! It seems like every day there is another hot button many who identify as “Christian” try to get everyone to push. As if they are THE issues God wants us to focus on. I find that very sad, and frankly, unbiblical.

 

James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” That seems pretty straightforward. Look after widows and orphans (modern day equivalent - look after those who have been marginalized by society, and those who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances). 

 

The second part of that verse says “to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” It does NOT say to police others to “help” them keep from being polluted by the world. It says keep ones self from being polluted by the world.

 

1 John 4:7-8 says “Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love" Let us love one another. Why does that seem so difficult to understand for some who feel that they know God?

 

1 Corinthians 16:14 states ”Everything should be done in love.” How do we show love? I am pretty sure it isn’t by shouting loudly about why one person feels another person is wrong, according to whatever dogma one has been taught through the years. I would be thrilled if my church was filled with drag queens who wanted to explore spirituality without being judged. Women who were wresting with a very tough decision. Seekers of all sexual orientations. Who would Christ welcome?
